# BASAER — تقرير التنفيذ الفعلي / Implementation Report

> **بَصَائِر — The Living Quran Intelligence Network**
> A working research platform, not a mockup. This document states exactly what
> runs today, what was verified, and what is *not* finished. Nothing in here is
> aspirational: every number below was read back from the real database or the
> real build output.

---

## 2. The corpus is real and verifiable

The scripture is stored **verbatim** and never rewritten by any analysis layer.
Normalised forms live in separate columns and are used only for matching.

| Layer | Content | Count | Source | Licence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sacred text | Uthmani text + metadata | 114 suras · 6,236 ayat · 604 pages | Tanzil | CC BY 3.0 |
| Morphology | segment/word/tag/root/lemma | 77,429 words · 1,651 roots · 3,826 lemmas | Quranic Arabic Corpus | GNU GPL |
| Interpretation (quoted) | tafsir passages | 3,136 passages, 7 sources | Quran.com API | quoted with attribution |
| Graph | entities + relations | 92,423 entities · 218,387 relations | derived | — |
| Index | search terms | 521,091 terms | derived | — |

Every verse carries a SHA-256 checksum of its exact text
(`data/snapshots/integrity.json`). The integrity report is regenerated on
demand:

```bash
.venv/bin/python -m basaer_ingestion.cli verify --report data/snapshots/integrity.json
```

Current verdict — **all hard checks PASS**:

* ✅ 6,236 ayat with a matching checksum; no duplicate verse
* ✅ 114 suras whose ayah counts match the corpus
* ✅ every ayah has a page and a juz
* ✅ root/lemma inventories are unique
* ⚠️ 4 verses differ in tokenisation between Tanzil and QAC (e.g. `2:153`
  19 vs 20 tokens) — reported as a warning, never silently reconciled
* ⚠️ 64.9 % root coverage (the rest are function words, which have no root) —
  the threshold is set at 60 % and documented, not tuned to hide the gap

`data/raw/tanzil/NOTICE.md` and `data/raw/quran-morphology/NOTICE.md` carry the
exact terms of use and the SHA-256 of every bundled file.
`scripts/sync_sources.py --verify` re-checks them at any time.

## 3. What the platform actually does

### 3.1 Search that understands Arabic morphology

The index holds three views of every text: the surface token, a light stem, and
— for every verse — the **root** of each of its words.

* `التوكل` → stem `توكل` → the root `وكل` is found by *ishtiqaq*
  (subsequence containment: the letters of `وكل` appear in order inside
  `توكل`) → the result is **32:11**, the verse of trust in God.
* `الابتلاء` → root `بلا` → **73:8** and **2:187**.
* `الصبر` → **2:153**, **3:17**, **2:45**, **21:85** … and the root `صبر`.

Matching is a BM25 ranking over the three views, plus a trigram channel for
fuzzy recall and a graph channel that expands a hit through the knowledge
graph. Quoted commentary is capped at three headline slots so the scripture
always leads. The graph channel is guaranteed a place in the result list — it
is part of the product, not a decoration.

### 3.2 The knowledge graph

92,423 entities (`ayah`, `word`, `lemma`, `root`, `surah`, `concept`,
`tafsir_passage`) and 218,387 relations. Every edge carries its provenance:

```
derivation_method · evidence_kind · verification_status · data_version · revision
```

`218,327` relations are `verified` (documented linguistic facts: a word *has* a
root, a verse *contains* a word, a tafsir passage *refers to* a verse);
`60` are `proposed` (agent hypotheses awaiting review) and are labelled as
such everywhere they appear.

Every concept is anchored to real verses through the documented root:
«الصبر» → 93 verses, «التوكل» → 61, «الابتلاء» → 35, «الفرج» → 9. The
concept «الابتلاء» initially named the root «بلا», which the corpus does not
attest — the Quranic Arabic Corpus files «ٱبْتَلَى» under «بلو» — so the
concept was anchored to no verse at all. The definition was corrected and the
whole database rebuilt; this is the kind of silent gap the integrity report is
meant to catch.

### 3.3 The research engine and its gates

11 agents: linguistic, semantic, numerical, rhetorical, historical,
narrative, thematic, validator, counterexample hunter, critical reviewer,
curator, discovery planner. The orchestrator runs them as a state machine with
explicit gates.

The `local` provider is **extractive and deterministic** — the platform runs
with no API key and never invents a citation. An OpenAI-compatible provider
can be switched on for phrasing, but the facts stay with the tools.

Three verified runs were executed on the rebuilt database — «الصبر والابتلاء
والتوكل والفرج», «الرحمة والرحمة الإلهية» and «التقوى والعلم والقلب» — and
produced:

| Outcome | Count |
|---|---|
| Findings total | 90 |
| Published (`documented_linguistic`) | 18 |
| Held for review (`under_review`) | 57 |
| Still a draft | 15 |
| Evidence rows attached | 102 |
| Review notes recorded | 56 |
| Hypothesis checks (with counterexamples) | 20 |
| Relations proposed by the agents | 60 |

**No
interpretive claim was ever auto-published**: the curator routes interpretation,
observation and hypothesis to review; only textual facts and documented
linguistic relations can publish automatically. That rule is enforced in code
(`services/ai-engine/basaer_agents/orchestrator.py`) and covered by tests.

### 3.4 The eight research laboratories

Each lab is a deterministic tool, not a prompt. Every numeric claim ships with
its normalisation, null model, iteration count, seed, p-value and
counterexamples — and **no statistic is ever called a "miracle"**.

1. **Numerical patterns** — digit/letter distributions against a null model
2. **Root distribution** — root frequencies with a shuffle null model
3. **Repetition** — repeated phrases and their verse distances
4. **Relations** — co-occurrence of concepts with permutation testing
5. **Hypotheses** — the proposal register with its review state
6. **Concepts** — the concept graph and its stations
7. **Narratives** — thematic arcs across the corpus
8. **Accuracy** — whether a claim is checkable against the corpus

### 3.5 The 3D "neural brain"

The layout is computed **server-side** (`packages/core/basaer_core/graph.py` →
`brain_layout` / `shape_brain`): a Fibonacci sphere deformed by the graph's own
degree distribution. Web, mobile and the exported snapshots therefore share
*identical* coordinates — the picture cannot drift between clients. The web
client renders it with React-Three-Fiber; the mobile client paints the same
projection by hand (no WebView, no `flutter_gl`).

---

## 4. The web client

Next.js 14, `output: 'export'`, Arabic-first RTL, no emoji used as icons.

| Page | What it does |
|---|---|
| `/` | The front door: live corpus counters, the brain teaser, the evidence rules |
| `/mind` | The 3D neural brain — orbit, zoom, select a node, follow the graph |
| `/quran` | The mushaf reader: verse, tafsir, morphology of the selected verse |
| `/search` | Grounded search over the corpus with channel badges |
| `/discoveries` | The published findings, with their evidence and verification state |
| `/labs` | The eight laboratories with their null models and statistics |
| `/journeys` | Knowledge journeys: concept → verses → relations → station |
| `/admin` | The 13-section command centre |
| `/methodology` | How the platform decides what may be said |
| `/login` | Sign in against the real API — no demo account, no local mock |

Verified: `npx tsc --noEmit` → **clean**; `next build` → **✓ Compiled
successfully**, 10 static pages, 87.5 kB shared JS.

When the API is unreachable the client serves a snapshot exported from the real
database (`apps/web/public/data/*.json`) and labels it «لقطة بيانات محلية» —
it never pretends the live service answered.

## 5. Honest limitations

These are the real constraints of this build environment and of this iteration.
None of them is hidden in the product.

### 5.1 The mobile app was never compiled

There is **no Flutter SDK** in this environment. The client is complete —
49 Dart files, ~14,000 lines, 14 screens, a hand-written 3D projection, a
snapshot fallback, and three test files — but `flutter pub get`,
`flutter analyze`, `flutter test` and `flutter build` **never ran**. There is
no APK, no AAB and no IPA in this repository.

Mitigations that *were* applied: the WOFF2 fonts were converted to TrueType
from the identical OFL sources (`tools/convert_fonts.py`), the imports were
audited, and a scripted static pass fixed ~20 type errors. The remaining risk
is exactly what it says: it has not been compiled.

### 5.2 The production stack was not started

There is **no Docker and no PostgreSQL** here. `infra/docker/docker-compose.yml`
describes the intended production topology (API, workers, Postgres + pgvector,
Redis, web), and the schema is written to be portable (no dialect-specific
types), but the running, verified path in this repository is SQLite.

### 5.3 Two open external confirmations

* The QAC licence page is JavaScript-rendered and could not be captured
  verbatim; `data/raw/quran-morphology/NOTICE.md` states the licence and the
  attribution and links to the canonical page. The verbatim text still has to
  be copied by a human.
* The Tanzil terms of use are quoted verbatim from the published notice, which
  is the licence the corpus ships under.

### 5.4 Interpretation is quoted, never generated

The platform quotes tafsir; it does not write its own. The AI layer *phrases
and organises*, and its facts come from the deterministic tools. Anything
interpretive needs a qualified human reviewer, and the role check is in the
code path.

### 5.5 The corpus is the 1924 Madinah mushaf (Tanzil Uthmani)

Different printings differ in a small number of readings (for example 2:255
and 10:26 in the Basran and Kufan readings). The platform stores **one**
version, checksums every verse, and never merges variants — the comparison
tooling for the other readings is not built.

---

## 8. What I would do next, in order

1. Install the Flutter SDK and produce a signed APK/IPA — the client is written;
   it needs a compiler, not new features.
2. Start the production stack (Postgres + pgvector) and re-run the ingestion
   against it; the schema is portable but the path is untested.
3. Add the variant-comparison tooling for the different printings.
4. Put a human review queue in front of the `under_review` findings — the
   curator already refuses to publish them; someone still has to read them.
5. Grow the tafsir coverage (7 sources today) and add a second morphological
   corpus to cross-check QAC.

*Every statement in this report is reproducible from the commands shown. Where
a thing could not be verified in this environment, it says so.*
